According to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) is set at 25:1 for areas with a high number of socio-economically disadvantaged students, and 30:1 for schools in other areas. The Annexure provides a state-wise breakdown of teacher vacancies at the elementary and secondary school levels for the year 2023-24, as reported by the respective State Governments and Union Territory administrations.
Education falls under the concurrent list of the Constitution, and the majority of schools are administered by the State and Union Territory Governments. It is their responsibility to ensure that vacancies are filled in a timely and transparent manner. The respective States and Union Territory Administrations maintain data on the vacancies for General, SC, ST, OBC, and EWS categories in these schools.
The recruitment of teachers in schools is an ongoing process due to factors such as retirement, resignation, and the need for additional teachers to accommodate a higher student population or new schools. The responsibility of filling these vacancies lies with the respective State and Union Territory Governments. The respective States and Union Territory Administrations also maintain records of the category-wise vacancies filled since January 2023 up to the present date.
