What is notional pay?
When an employee is under notional fixation, their pay is fixed at a higher pay scale from the date of such fixation. Although increments in the higher pay scales are allowed, no arrears are payable. To calculate notional pay for a retiree, the amount is increased by adding a number of increments earned at the particular level while serving. The increments are added at a rate of 3%. Notional payment refers to payments made to employees that are not in cash but must be treated as cash for purposes of PAYE and NICs.
