Revamped OROP Scheme: Enhanced Benefits for Retired Forces

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has unveiled an ambitious overhaul of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme, a move set to significantly enhance the financial security of around 30 lakh retired Armed Forces members and their families. This ambitious reform will introduce a new calculation method that accounts for the latest salary structures and allowances, ensuring that pensions accurately reflect both the current economic landscape and the sacrifices made by these devoted individuals.

This revision marks the second major update to the OROP scheme, the first having taken place in 2019, underscoring the government’s ongoing dedication to supporting its veterans. Under the proposed changes, pensions will be carefully determined by averaging the lowest and highest pensions of personnel retiring in 2023, based on rank and years of service. This approach aims to foster fairness and equity among all retired military personnel.

OROP 3 Revised Pension Table 2024 Notification

As stated in the Defence Ministry’s Letter No.12(1)/2014/D(Pen/Pol)-Part-II, dated November 7, 2015, there will be a recalibration of pensions for Defence Forces personnel every five years going forward. The first adjustment under the One Rank One Pension (OROP) Scheme took effect on July 1, 2019, with the next update scheduled for July 1, 2024. For eligible Defence Forces pensioners and their family members, pensions will be recalculated based on the average of the minimum and maximum pensions for those who retired in 2023, considering the same rank and length of service. Furthermore, pensions that exceed this average will be protected from reduction.

Significance of OROP Scheme: Key Points Explained

The ‘One Rank One Pension’ (OROP) system is a thoughtfully designed framework that determines a soldier’s pension based mainly on their rank and total years of service, rather than the specific year they retired. This progressive approach ensures that all veterans, irrespective of when they left active duty, can enjoy any future pension increases, fostering a sense of fairness and equity among all who have served.

The OROP initiative seeks to deliver uniform and dependable pension benefits across different ranks and lengths of service, effectively addressing long-standing issues and guaranteeing that every retired military member receives the respect and financial assistance they rightfully deserve. This crucial element of the OROP program highlights its importance as a transformative step for the welfare of former armed forces personnel, reflecting a deep commitment to honoring their years of service and sacrifices.
