Boost Tourism in Lakshadweep Islands | 2024 Strategy
The focus of the strategy for the development of Lakshadweep Islands in 2024 is to increase tourism in a sustainable manner while preserving the unique cultural and environmental characteristics of the islands. The goal is to establish Lakshadweep as a model of responsible and inclusive development, where economic progress is balanced with environmental conservation. This strategy involves utilizing the natural beauty of the islands to promote tourism, building a strong and resilient economy, and fostering a sense of pride and well-being within the local communities.

The approach to holistic development includes strategic planning and active engagement with the community. The vision is for Lakshadweep Islands to thrive in harmony with nature and sustainable economic practices. All projects for the development of the islands adhere to the requirements set forth by various Applicable Laws, such as obtaining environment, forest, and CRZ clearances.

The Ministry of Tourism has revamped the Swadesh Darshan Scheme as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD 2.0) with the objective of developing sustainable and responsible tourism destinations. This approach follows a destination and tourism-centric approach and has identified 57 destinations in the country, including Lakshadweep, for development under SD 2.0.
In alignment with the National Strategy for Sustainable Tourism formulated by the Ministry of Tourism, the ‘Travel for LiFE’ initiative has been launched to promote sustainable tourism in the country. This initiative focuses on mindful and deliberate actions taken by tourists and tourism businesses in utilizing tourism resources.
To further promote sustainable and responsible tourist destinations, the Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management (IITTM), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and Responsible Tourism Society of India (RTSOI), organized Regional Workshops across different regions in the country. These workshops included participation from states and union territories, including Lakshadweep. A workshop specifically for the Southern region, which includes Lakshadweep, was organized in Hyderabad in February 2023.
