Central Government Holidays 2027: Complete List: The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Government of India, has officially issued the Holiday List for Central Government Offices during the year 2027. The Office Memorandum (OM) dated 16 July 2026 prescribes the list of Gazetted Holidays, Restricted Holidays, optional holidays, and important administrative instructions applicable to Central Government offices across India.
The notification is applicable to all Central Government Ministries, Departments, attached offices, subordinate offices, and various Government organizations, with separate provisions for offices located in Delhi/New Delhi and those located outside Delhi.

Highlights of the Central Government Holiday List 2027
- Official notification issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT).
- Applicable from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2027.
- 17 Gazetted Holidays notified for Central Government offices in Delhi/New Delhi.
- 32 Restricted Holidays (RH) notified for Delhi/New Delhi offices.
- Employees are permitted to avail any two Restricted Holidays during the year.
- Separate provisions exist for Central Government offices located outside Delhi/New Delhi.
- Special provisions for moon-sighting festivals like Eid, Muharram and Id-e-Milad.
- Special clarification regarding celebration of Diwali on Naraka Chaturdasi in certain States.
Who Will Be Covered?
The notification applies to:
- All Ministries and Departments of the Government of India
- Attached and Subordinate Offices
- Central Government Administrative Offices
- Central Government Employees
- Industrial and Commercial Establishments under the Central Government
- Indian Missions Abroad (with separate provisions)
- Central Government offices across all States and Union Territories
Holiday Rules for Delhi / New Delhi Offices
All Central Government Administrative Offices located in Delhi/New Delhi shall observe the holidays specified in Annexure-I.
Additionally, every Central Government employee is permitted to avail any two Restricted Holidays from the list given in Annexure-II during the year 2027.
Holiday Rules for Offices Outside Delhi
Central Government offices situated outside Delhi/New Delhi must observe the following compulsory holidays:
- Republic Day
- Independence Day
- Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday
- Buddha Purnima
- Christmas Day
- Dussehra
- Diwali
- Good Friday
- Guru Nanak’s Birthday
- Id-ul-Fitr
- Id-ul-Zuha (Bakrid)
- Mahavir Jayanti
- Muharram
- Prophet Mohammad’s Birthday (Id-e-Milad)
In addition to the above compulsory holidays, every State Government Employees Welfare Coordination Committee may select three additional holidays from the list of optional festivals notified by DoPT.

The following twelve festivals have been notified for selection:
- Additional Day for Dussehra
- Holi
- Janmashtami
- Ram Navami
- Maha Shivratri
- Ganesh Chaturthi
- Makar Sankranti
- Rath Yatra
- Onam
- Pongal
- Sri Panchami / Basant Panchami
- Vishu / Vaisakhi / Ugadi / Gudi Padwa / Cheti Chand / Chaitra Sukladi / Bahag Bihu / Mashadi / Naoraz / Chhath Puja / Karva Chauth
Important Administrative Instructions
No Substitute Holiday
If any festival holiday falls on a weekly off or another declared holiday, no substitute holiday will be granted.
Restricted Holiday List
State Coordination Committees may prepare their own Restricted Holiday list depending upon local festivals, while including the remaining optional holidays.
Moon-Sighting Festivals
The dates of the following festivals may change depending upon the sighting of the moon:
- Id-ul-Fitr
- Id-ul-Zuha
- Muharram
- Id-e-Milad
For Delhi/New Delhi offices, DoPT will officially announce any change. For offices outside Delhi, State Government decisions shall apply. In urgent cases, announcements through PIB, AIR, Doordarshan, television, or newspapers may be acted upon without waiting for a formal order.
Special Provision for Diwali 2027
Diwali (Deepavali) falls on Friday, 29 October 2027.
However, in certain States, Diwali is traditionally celebrated on Naraka Chaturdasi (28 October 2027). DoPT has clarified that Central Government offices in such States may observe the holiday on Naraka Chaturdasi if that day alone has been declared as the compulsory Diwali holiday by the respective State Government.
Holiday Rules for Industrial, Commercial and Trading Establishments
Industrial, Commercial and Trading establishments under the Central Government may observe up to 16 holidays during the year, including the three National Holidays:
- Republic Day
- Independence Day
- Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday
The remaining holidays may be decided by the respective organizations.
Holiday Rules for Banks
The DoPT has clarified that holidays for Banks will continue to be regulated separately under the instructions issued by the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.
Holiday Rules for Indian Missions Abroad
Indian Missions abroad will notify their holidays according to the existing DoPT instructions and may select ten holidays after including the mandatory national and compulsory holidays.

- Every employee can avail two Restricted Holidays during 2027.
- No substitute holiday will be granted if a festival falls on a Sunday or weekly off.
- Moon-sighting festivals are subject to change by official announcement.
- States may choose three optional holidays from the notified list.
- Industrial establishments can determine their own holiday schedule within DoPT guidelines.
- Banks follow separate holiday instructions issued by the Ministry of Finance.
- Union Territories will notify holidays according to the Ministry of Home Affairs instructions.
