Central Government Holiday List for 2026: The Central Government Office Holiday List 2026 provides a complete schedule of holidays for Central Government employees across India during the year 2026. The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), under the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, releases the official holiday notification every year in July, outlining the holiday declaration guidelines for the upcoming year.
In July 2025, the DoPT issued a detailed notification explaining the process for declaring holidays for Central Government Offices situated in different regions of India. The notification includes three main categories: Compulsory Holidays, Optional Holidays, and Restricted Holidays.
Compulsory Holiday List 2026: As per the DoPT notification, there are 14 compulsory holidays applicable to all Central Government Offices throughout India. These holidays are to be observed mandatorily across all departments and offices. List of 14 Compulsory Holidays:
- Republic Day
- Independence Day
- Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday
- Buddha Purnima
- Christmas Day
- Dussehra (Vijay Dashmi)
- Diwali (Deepavali)
- Good Friday
- Guru Nanak’s Birthday
- Idu’l Fitr
- Idu’l Zuha
- Mahavir Jayanti
- Muharram
- Prophet Mohammad’s Birthday (Id-E-Milad)
Optional Holiday List 2026: In addition to the compulsory holidays, every Central Government Employee can choose three optional holidays from a list of 12 optional holidays, depending on regional and religious preferences. List of 12 Optional Holidays:
- An Additional Day for Dussehra
- Holi
- Janmashtami (Vaishnavi)
- Ram Navami
- Maha Shivratri
- Ganesh Chaturthi / Vinayak Chaturthi
- Makar Sankranti
- Rath Yatra
- Onam
- Pongal
- Sri Panchami / Basant Panchami
- Vishu, Vaisakhi, Vaisakhadi, Bhag Bihu, Mashadi Ugadi, Chaitra Sukladi, Cheti Chand, Gudi Padwa, 1st Navratra, Naoroz, Chhath Puja, Karva Chauth
Each year, the Central Government Employees Co-ordination Welfare Committee of the respective state capitals decides and publishes the finalized list of three optional holidays before December.
Restricted Holiday List 2026: The Restricted Holiday List allows Central Government employees (working in administrative offices only) to avail two additional holidays on an optional basis. These are not applicable for industrial and non-industrial staff or workers.
16 Holidays for Industrial and Commercial Establishments: Industrial, commercial, and trading establishments under the Central Government of India will observe only 16 holidays per calendar year.
This list includes the three National Holidays — Republic Day, Independence Day, and Gandhi Jayanti.
The remaining holidays are decided by the Head of the Organization in consultation with employees and trade unions.

According to the notification from the Government of India, the holiday for the Diwali festival is set for November 8, 2026. Unfortunately, this date falls on a Sunday.
As per the notification from the Government of India, the holiday has been declared for the Dussehra festival on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
According to the latest government notification, the holiday for the Holi festival is scheduled for March 4, 2026, which falls on a Wednesday.
