History of Dolyatra Festival
Dolyatra has its roots in Hindu mythology and is associated with various legends. One popular legend is the story of Prahlada and Holika. Prahlada was a devotee of Lord Vishnu, while his father, Hiranyakashipu, was a demon king who wanted to kill Prahlada due to his devotion. Holika, Hiranyakashipu’s sister, had a boon that made her immune to fire. She tricked Prahlada into sitting on her lap and entered a bonfire. However, Prahlada’s unwavering faith saved him, and Holika was burnt to ashes. This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is celebrated as Holika Dahan, which takes place on the night before Dolyatra.
Rituals and Traditions of Dolyatra
Dolyatra is a two-day festival that begins with Holika Dahan. People gather around a bonfire, perform prayers, and offer coconut and other offerings to seek blessings and protection from evil spirits. The next day is the main celebration of Dolyatra. People gather in open spaces, streets, and temples, armed with colored powders called gulal and water-filled balloons called pichkaris. The air fills with laughter, music, and shouts of “Holi Hai!” as people playfully smear each other with colors and drench one another with water. Traditional sweets, like gujiyas and malpuas, are also prepared and shared among friends and family.

In the regions of Braj, Bengal, Odisha, and Assam, the idols of Radha Krishna are ceremoniously paraded in a swaying palanquin, embellished with an array of flowers, leaves, vibrant garments, and papers. The procession advances accompanied by melodious music, resounding conch shells, trumpet horns, and jubilant cries of triumph, echoing the words ‘Hôri Bola’.
In Assam, the festival is marked by the singing of songs such as “Phaku khele korunamoy” by the esteemed 16th-century Assamese poet Madhavdev, particularly at the Barpeta Satra. Srimanta Sankardev, a revered 15th-century saint, artist, and social reformer, joyously celebrated Doul at Bordowa in Nagaon, Assam. The festivities also encompass the playful indulgence in colors derived traditionally from flowers.
In South India, during the evening hours, devotional compositions known as kirtan by eminent poets like Annamacharya and Tyagaraja from the 15th century are melodiously sung.
