For this year, Bakrid, or Eid ul-Adha, is predicted to start on the evening of Wednesday, 28 June 2023, till the dusk of Thursday, 29 June 2023.
On this auspicious day, people generally commence with prayers and head over to the nearby mosques for the early morning namaz. Followed by the cheerful greetings of “Eid Mubarak,” which reverberate from every corner of the globe.
The primary adherence of Bakrid in India is the symbolic reenactment of Ibrahim’s obedience by offering a cow, goat, lamb, buffalo, or camel. Then, numerous Muslim families offer the meat from the sacrificed animal to family, neighbors, friends, and the poor with the belief of serving all Muslims a meat-based meal on this holy day. Besides, Sheer khurma, a sweet treat cooked with milk, vermicelli, and dry fruits, is another important aspect of the Bakrid.
Furthermore, Eid Al-Adha honors the end of the duration of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
God gave Abraham a goat to sacrifice as a substitute before he abandoned his son. According to God’s instruction, the goat was divided into 3 parts and sacrificed. One-third was given to the poor, and another part was given to friends and families. The rest was retained by Abraham’s family. According to the Islamic Lunar Calendar, the grand festival of Bakrid usually falls on the 10th day of Dhu Al-Hijjah. This festival is celebrated all over the world under different names. In Urdu and Hindi, Eid Al-Adha is called Bakr-eid.
