Popularly known as the ‘festival of Qurbani’, Bakrid in India is quite a hype among the Muslim community and holds immense importance. It is considered to be the second most popular festival in the Islam religion and is often referred to as Eid al-Adha.
How is Bakrid celebrated in India?
Marking the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham who sacrificed his son, Ismail to Allah (God), Bakrid is usually celebrated in the month of July. On the pious occasion, the Muslim community gathers together at the mosques where they pray for prosperity, happiness, and good health. The occasion, however, indulges a number of rituals, like animal sacrifices, gift exchanges, and grand dawats. Muslims also organize a meet-and-greet on the day of the festival, with impeccable non-vegetarian delicacies like biryani, mutton, and beef. Besides, a number of snack items, starters, and a range of desserts are also served to escalate the culinary appetite. The festival ends with the re-enactment of Ibrahim’s loyalty and sacrifice of his only child to Allah. However, in the re-enactment, an animal is sacrificed, symbolizing the child. Once the rituals are done, the animal sacrificed is then distributed among the poor and the needy as a gesture of holy spirit.
