An important office order has been issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (S) Department on 25th February 2021. As per the order, the retirement age has been hiked from 59 to 60 years for Tamil Nadu Government employees and teachers with effect from May 2021.
The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K.Palaniswami announced on Thursday that the retirement age of State Government employees and teachers is increased at par with Central Government employees.
Making a suo-motu statement in the Legislative Assembly, he said, the order would be applicable to employees of the government and government-aided schools, legal and constitutional bodies, government sectors, local bodies, commissions, boards, and unions.
He said, all those who were in service and those who would retire on the 31st of May this year, would be covered under the announcement.

ORDER:
During the Interim Budget session 2021-2022, the Hon’ble Chief Minister has made an announcement on the floor of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on 25.02.2021 inter-alia to increase the retirement age of Tamil Nadu State Government employees from 59 to 60 years and the orders would be applicable to employees of the Government and Government Aided Educational Institutions, Legal and Constitutional, Boards and Societies. The Hon’ble Chief Minister also said that all those who are in service and those who would retire on 31.05.2021 would be covered under the announcement.
2. Accordingly, the Government orders to increase the age of superannuation of Government servants/teachers from 59 years to 60 years. This will apply to all those who are in service as on date and due to retire on superannuation from 31.05.2021.
3. This order shall also be applicable to all teaching and non-teaching staff working in aided educational institutions and employees of all Constitutional/ Statutory Bodies, Public Sector Undertakings including all state Corporations, Local Bodies, Boards, Commissions, and Societies.
4. Necessary amendments to Tamil Nadu Fundamental Rules will be issued separately.

In the Government order cited, the Government have issued orders increasing the age of superannuation of Government servants from 58 years to 59 years. Consequent to the issuance of the above Government order, certain points have been raised for clarification. The Government have examined the same and the following clarifications are issued:
The Government has decided to increase the age of superannuation of Government servants from 58 years to 59 years and orders accordingly. This will apply to all those who are in regular service as on date and due to retire on superannuation from 31.05.2020.
2. This order shall also be applicable to all teaching and non-teaching staff working in aided educational institutions and employees of all Constitutional / Statutory Bodies, and Public Sector Undertakings including all State Corporations. Local Bodies, Boards. Commissions, Societies, etc.
3. The relevant provisions under rule 56 of Tamil Nadu Fundamental Rules will be modified to the above extent. Necessary amendments to the above rules will be issued accordingly.
