Recruitment of Employees in Railways: 3,02,550 Candidates in Last 5 Years
The recruitment of employees in the railway industry has been a consistent process over the past five years. Considering the vast size, spatial distribution, and critical nature of railway operations in India, there is a continuous need to fill vacancies. These vacancies are primarily filled through the placement of indents by the railways with recruitment agencies, based on operational requirements. Throughout this process, new vacancies may arise and are subsequently filled.
Recently, two major examinations were conducted to fill 1.39 lakh vacancies, attracting over 2.37 crore candidates. The first stage computer-based test for CEN 01/2019 (NTPC) had more than 1.26 crore candidates and was conducted in seven phases from December 28, 2020, to July 31, 2021. This test took place across 211 cities and 726 centers in 15 languages, spanning a total of 68 days and 133 shifts. Similarly, the CBT for CEN RRC 01/2019 (Level 1) had over 1.11 crore candidates and was conducted in five phases from August 17, 2022 to October 11, 2022. This test took place across 191 cities and 551 centers in 15 languages, spanning a total of 33 days and 99 shifts.
During the last five years (2018-2019 to 2022-2023) and the current year (2023-2024 until December 31, 2023), a total of 3,02,550 (provisional) candidates have been impanelled for various Group ‘C’ posts, including Level 1 and security-related positions.
Effective manpower planning requires a continuous review of sanctioned strength in response to changing workload conditions, the introduction of new technologies, and working systems, and the creation of new assets. The railways regularly conduct work studies to assess various activities. This exercise enables Indian Railways to utilize its human resources as efficiently and productively as possible.
