Karnataka is a state in India that is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant festivals. The state has a wide range of public holidays, bank holidays, and restricted holidays for state government employees. Public Holidays in Karnataka Karnataka has a wide range of public holidays that are celebrated throughout the year. These holidays are celebrated to commemorate important events in the state’s history, such as the birth of the state’s founder, Tipu Sultan. Some of the public holidays in Karnataka in 2023 include Republic Day (January 26th), Mahaveer Jayanti (April 17th), Independence Day (August 15th), and Diwali (November 4th). This list does not include Uttarayana Punyakala, Makara Sankranti Festival (January 15th, 2023), Basava Jayanthi/Akshaya Tritiya (April 23rd, 2023), Naraka Chaturdashi (November 12th, 2023) which occur on Sundays, Mahalaya Amavasya (October 14th, 2023) which falls on the Second Saturday, Khutub-E-Ramzan (April 22nd, 2023), and Maharshi Valmiki Javanthi (October 28th, 2023) which occur on the Fourth Saturday.
Government Offices across the State will be shut on official Holidays. Nonetheless, Heads of departments will need to make arrangements for the completion of urgent tasks. If any of the Muslim Fraternity festivals do not occur on the announced date, members of the Muslim Fraternity who are employed in Government Service may be provided a holiday on the date of observance, considering the holidays which have already been notified.
A local holiday has been declared for Kodagu District on the occasion of Kail Muhuruth on Sunday, 3rd September 2023, Tula Sankramana on Wednesday, 18th October 2023, and Hurthi Festival on Tuesday, 28th November 2023. The Commissioner of Public Instructions for the Education Department will publish a separate list of holidays.
In addition to the General Holidays, State Government Employees may use up to two restricted holidays in the year 2023, given prior approval from the relevant authority granting Casual Leave.
The state government of Karnataka also has a list of restricted holidays for its employees. These holidays are observed to give the employees a break from their daily routine and to provide them with some much-needed rest. Some of the restricted holidays for state government employees in Karnataka in 2023 include Guru Purnima (July 11th), Raksha Bandhan (August 21st), and Dussehra (October 19th). This list does not include Souramana Ugadi (14.04.2023) Friday, as it is a General Holiday due to Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Jayanthi, nor Swarna Gowri Vrata (18.09.2023) Monday, which is a General Holiday for Varasiddhi Vinavaka Vrata, or Ananta Padmanabha Vrata (28.09.2023) Thursday, which is a General Holiday for Eid-Milad.
Karnataka also has a list of bank holidays that are observed throughout the year. These holidays are observed to give the banks and their employees a break from their daily routines. Some of the bank holidays in Karnataka in 2023 include Good Friday (April 2nd), Eid-ul-Fitr (May 13th), Ganesh Chaturthi (August 11th), and Christmas (December 25th). These holidays are observed by all the banks in the state and are an important part of the banking system.
