GT, led by their explosive all-rounder captain Hardik Pandya, played almost every match with one batter short. GT arrived at IPL 2023 auction with INR 19.25 crore with the slot of 3 overseas players and 4 Indian players. So they bought Kane Williamson, KS Bharat, Odean Smith, Mohit Sharma, Shivam Mavi, and Joshua Little.

In 2022 Jason Roy played only 11 t20s, out of which he scored only 206 runs at an average of 18.72 and a strike rate of a mere 104.04. Additionally, he was not picked by the England T20 team for the world cup. Also, he was picked up at a base price of INR 2 crore by GT in 2022; however, later, he decided to sit out the tournament. These are the major reasons why he was released.
