Benefits for EWS | Economic Support for Lower-Income Sections

In an effort to provide equal opportunities for Economically Weaker Sections (EWSs), the Central Government has implemented a policy of reserving 10% of all direct recruitment vacancies in its posts and services. This policy ensures that individuals from EWS backgrounds have a fair chance at securing employment in the government sector and can contribute to the growth and development of the country. This move has been widely welcomed as a step towards greater inclusivity and social justice.

In pursuance of insertion of clauses 15(6) and 16(6) in the Constitution, vide the Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 and in order to enable the EWSs, who are not covered under the existing scheme of reservations for the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes and the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes, Department of Personnel and Training has notified that 10% reservation would be provided for EWSs in Central Government posts and services in direct recruitment vacancies to be notified on or after 01.02.2019.

This information was provided by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh in a written reply to a question in RajyaSabha today.

EWS stands for Economically Weaker Sections. These are individuals or families who belong to the economically disadvantaged category.

The Constitution (One Hundred and Third Amendment) Act, 2019 is an amendment to the Constitution of India. It introduced clauses 15(6) and 16(6) to enable reservations for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in Central Government posts and services.

The 10% reservation for EWS in Central Government posts and services is applicable to those individuals who are not covered under existing reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Socially and Educationally Backward Classes.

The 10% reservation for EWS in Central Government posts and services is applicable to direct recruitment vacancies that are notified on or after 01.02.2019.

The announcement about the 10% reservation for EWS in Central Government posts and services was made by Dr Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space.
