Republic Day Parade 2024 To Have All-Women Contingents
The Republic Day Parade is soon approaching and it seems like the theme of this year’s parade will be focused on the power of women, also known as Nari Shakti. Over the years, there has been a substantial effort to provide more opportunities for women in India’s defence forces. The Union Ministry of Defence is currently planning to increase the number of women participants in next year’s parade.
According to an office memorandum released last month, all marching contingents, bands, tableaux, and other performances during the parade at Kartavya Path will consist solely of women. However, a challenge that may arise is that some marching contingents, such as the Army’s infantry, do not currently permit women’s participation. Despite this limitation, the government aims to have maximum representation of women in the parade.

History of Republic Day
On the occasion of Republic Day, India commemorates the adoption of its Constitution. The reason behind this date is due to the Indian National Congress’ publication of the Purna Swaraj on January 26, 1930. This declaration signaled India’s independence from British rule. Although India gained its independence on August 15, 1947, the committee responsible for drafting a Constitution was not established until August 29 of the same year.
The committee was headed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, who oversaw the drafting of the Constitution that was presented to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. The assembly conducted numerous sessions over two years before ultimately finalizing the draft. After much discussion and debate, the 308 Assembly Members signed two copies of the Constitution – one in Hindi and the other in English – on January 24, 1950. Two days later, on January 26, the Constitution of India was adopted and came into effect. On that same day, Dr. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the first President of India.
Republic Day 2024 India Theme
The Indian government is planning to make history by proposing an all-women marching and band contingents for the Republic Day parade in 2024. This move by the Narendra Modi government is set to strengthen its women empowerment narrative in a Lok Sabha election year. Women in the armed forces have been making significant strides since 2015 when the women’s marching contingent made its debut at the Republic Day parade with then-US president Barack Obama as the chief guest.
With the Indian Navy deploying women officers on its warships and the defence minister approving the posting of women officers of the Territorial Army with engineer regiments along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan, women are now at the forefront of performing a range of duties in the Indian military. An official memorandum has been circulated by the ceremonial branch of the ministry of defence, which handles the Republic Day parade, to the three services and various ministries and departments, asking them to prepare for an all-women parade in 2024.

75th Republic Day of India
On the 26th of January 1950, India commemorated Republic Day, which marks the day the Constitution of India was established, replacing the Government of India Act 1935 as the country’s governing document. This historic moment officially marked India’s separation from British Raj and established it as a republic. The Indian Constituent Assembly adopted the constitution on the 26th of November 1949, but it wasn’t until January 26th, 1950, that it went into effect. The date of January 26th was specifically chosen to coincide with the Declaration of Indian Independence made by the Indian National Congress in 1930.
Celebrations of Republic Day
Indulging in a grand display of cultural diversity and national unity, the primary celebration of Republic Day is held at the Rajpath in the capital city of New Delhi, hereby called ‘Kartavya Path’. It is an honor to perform before the esteemed President of India on this momentous occasion. The Kartavya Path hosts a spectacular parade, paying homage to India’s rich cultural heritage.
Significance of Republic Day
