The auspicious Navapatrika Puja is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 21, 2023. The break of dawn on Navpatrika Day is expected at 05:49 AM, while the observational sunrise will occur at 06:10 AM. The Saptami Tithi will commence at 11:24 PM on October 20, 2023, and conclude at 09:53 PM on October 21, 2023.

Rituals and Customs of Maha Saptami

On the day of Maha Saptami, devotees wake up early to perform special rituals and offer prayers to Goddess Durga. The day begins with a holy bath, followed by the installation of the deity’s idol or picture in a beautifully decorated pandal (temporary shrine). Devotees then perform a series of rituals, including the chanting of mantras and recitation of sacred texts.

One of the most significant customs observed on Maha Saptami is the ‘Kola Bou Snan,’ which involves bathing a banana tree symbolizing the goddess. The banana tree is considered an embodiment of Goddess Durga, and this ritual signifies her presence during the festival. After the bath, the banana tree is draped in a traditional saree, adorned with jewelry, and worshipped with flowers, incense, and other offerings.

Another important ritual on Maha Saptami is the ‘Nabapatrika Puja.’ Nabapatrika refers to a group of nine plants, representing nine different forms of Goddess Durga. These plants are tied together and worshipped as a symbol of feminine power. The Nabapatrika Puja is performed before sunrise, accompanied by Vedic chants and hymns. This ritual is believed to invoke the blessings of the goddess and seek her divine protection.

Significance of Maha Saptami

Maha Saptami holds immense spiritual significance in Hindu mythology. According to ancient scriptures, it was on this day that Goddess Durga attained victory over the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The day is considered highly auspicious for seeking the goddess’s blessings and divine intervention in one’s life.

Maha Saptami is also associated with the concept of ‘Saptashati,’ which refers to the seven hundred verses dedicated to Goddess Durga. Devotees recite these verses with utmost devotion during the festival, believing that it brings them closer to the divine energy of the goddess. The recitation of Saptashati is believed to purify the mind, body, and soul, and bestow blessings upon the devotees.

Celebrations of Maha Saptami

Maha Saptami is celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm in various parts of India. Elaborate pandals are set up, showcasing artistic representations of Goddess Durga and her various forms. These pandals become the center of attraction, attracting devotees who come to offer their prayers and seek blessings.

The festival is marked by vibrant cultural programs, including traditional music, dance performances, and dramas depicting mythological stories related to Goddess Durga. Devotees also participate in ‘arti’ (a ritual of offering prayers with lit lamps) and sing devotional songs in praise of the goddess.

Food plays a significant role in the festivities of Maha Saptami. Devotees prepare a variety of delicious vegetarian dishes as offerings to the goddess. These offerings, known as ‘bhog,’ are later distributed among the devotees as prasad (blessed food). It is believed that consuming prasad brings good fortune and divine blessings.
