7th CPC Pay Scale Structure for Level 17

In India, the HAG Scale (Higher Administrative Grade) of Pay Matrix Level 17 in the 7th Pay Commission is the most prestigious position within the Central Government Services. The highest salary can be earned by experienced IAS Officers in the rank of Cabinet Secretary which amounts to Rs. 2,50,000. The appointment of the Cabinet Secretary, who holds the highest IAS position, is made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. This committee, headed by the Prime Minister, determines the candidate’s qualifications and level of trustworthiness.

Cabinet Secretary in India

The starting monthly salary for an IAS officer is Rs. 56,100 (TA, DA, and HRA are additional) and a Cabinet Secretary can earn up to Rs. 2,20,000. The Cabinet Secretary is considered as India’s most important civil servant who holds a powerful position in the government. As the top executive officer and senior-most civil servant in the Indian administration, he serves as the right hand of the Prime Minister of India.
As per the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission, the apex level of the pay matrix structure is set at Level 17 with a corresponding pay scale of Rs. 225000. The Officers in Pay Matrix Level 14 and higher, who are entitled to use an official car, will have the option to avail themselves of the existing facility or to draw the TPTA at the rate of Rs. 15,750 + DA per month. In addition, during the 6th CPC, a Grade Pay Structure ranging from 1800 to 10000 for Pay Band-I to Pay Band-4 was recommended. Moreover, the HAG Scale had four suggested pay scales with the highest pay scale reaching up to 90000.

Grade Pay of Cabinet Secretary

The Cabinet Secretary’s Grade Pay has been a topic of discussion for quite some time now. As per the 6th CPC, there was a proposal to introduce a Grade Pay System that would span from 1800 to 10000 for Pay Band-I to Pay Band-4. Furthermore, the HAG Scale was suggested for the next four pay scales, with the uppermost pay scale reaching a whopping 90000.

Salary of IAS Officers in India

The salary of an IAS Officer is a topic of great interest for those who want to apply for the UPSC Exam. The pay offered for different posts is one of the main reasons why candidates are attracted to this profession. An IAS officer’s starting salary is consistent across all posts and increases with experience and promotions over time.

The IAS officer pay scale is divided into 18 levels, each with a different basic pay ranging from INR 56,100 to INR 2,50,000. The duration of service required for each level varies from 1 to 37+ years. The various positions in each level include Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Undersecretary, Assistant Secretary, Additional District Magistrate, Deputy Secretary, Joint Secretary, Special Secretary-cum-Director, Director, Secretary-cum-Commissioner, Principal Secretary, Additional Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary, Chief Secretary, and Cabinet Secretary of India.
